Medicus vs. Dream Swing

The Medicus has been on the market for approximately 12 years. It's a golf club with a hinge in the club shaft. The hinge is positioned in the shaft so that if you jerk the club back too fast on the take away or don’t swing so that the club is toe up at the 9 O’clock position on your back swing the hinge will break giving you feedback that you are swinging a wrong motion. Dream Swing feels that the Medicus when used with the Dream Swing is a great tempo and swing plane trainer. However, swinging the Medicus by itself has very little value.

Please read this review to understand why we feel this is true.
With the Medicus you are left to yourself with the instruction to figure out how to do a motion you have never felt.
They advertise that if you swing off-plane while swinging the Medicus the club will break and give you instant feedback of a improper motion.

This is true and false. The golfer can manipulate the Medicus and swing a terrible swing with it and the club will not break. I believe the feature that the Medicus provides that is most valuable is that it helps golfers slow the take away down so they learn a more smooth and relaxed take away. Beyond that I truly see no value by using this training aid.

Dr. Rick Jensen, is the President of the Performance Center at PGA National Resort & Spa. As a sport psychologist, he works extensively with touring pros on the PGA TOUR and LPGA Tour. His clients have combined for 197 tournament wins including 32 major championships. Said this about swing trainers and the Dream Swing,
“The first thing you look for in a good training aid is something that will guide your movement during the swing. The Dream Swing keeps your club on plane through the entire swing allowing you to develop a kinesthetic sense for what the golf swing feels like.
Another thing you want in a good trainer is something that gives you continues feedback. Because of the way the Dream Swing is constructed it forces your arms hands and club to swing on plane. If your body then performs an incorrect motion that would cause the club to travel off plane you will put resistance against the device and the Dream Swing will guide your club into the ground giving instant feedback of an incorrect motion. This is a significant advantage because we’re not able to see yourself swing and we also aren’t able to have our instructor watch us every time we practice.
A third thing you look for is if it is natural. Some training aids restrict your natural motion and effect your ability to hit balls because they cause you to do thing that are unnatural and swing in slow motion. You actually don’t want this. You want to be able to swing in the trainer the same speed you would hit balls out on the courses.”
Based on what Dr. Jensen said, The Medicus would not be a good golf swing training aid because it does not guide your movement during the swing. Although it gives feedback it can be manipulated so the club will not break allowing you to practice mistakes while using it. Because it provides no resistance you will not get the feeling of what is necessary to improve.
Where the Dream Swing guides and forces the golf club to travel on-plane with out having to think about it and provides resistance if a motions is preformed incorrectly the Medicus will break at the hinge when you do something wrong which then forces you to concentrate on having your arms travel on a path so the hinge does not break.
With the Dream Swing, you are able to focus on what your body needs to do while the trainer forces your club to travel on-plane through the entire swing allowing you to as Dr Jensen said, “Develop a kinesthetic sense for what the golf swing feels like.” You don’t get that with the Medicus.
